There is an idea doing the rounds again this week, and it is worth stopping on. That there is no such thing as an overnight success.
The founders who seem to appear from nowhere were building for years before anyone was watching. The scrapped versions. The dead ends. The features nobody wanted. The late nights and the quiet mornings that never make the headline.
The result is the only part that shows. The valuation, the launch, the sudden fame. The effort that built it stays invisible, because effort is invisible by nature, and it runs for years before any result appears.
That is the whole trick of the overnight success. It shows the result and hides the decade. So the result gets called luck, or genius, or one lucky break, when it was really just a long stretch of ordinary work that nobody filmed.
And the two halves behave differently. The result sits outside anyone’s control. It arrives late, on its own schedule, only after a long run of work with nothing to show for it. The effort sits fully inside control. It is available today. And it is the only thing that was ever building the result in the first place.
So the effort is the real work, and the result is only the day the world happens to look.
That is what an overnight success actually is. Ten years of invisible effort, and one visible morning.
